Digestabili-tea • An Aromatic, Carminative Tea Blend

This flavorful, highly aromatic and pungent tea reduces gas and bloating, improves digestion and assimilation, and increases circulation. 

It contains numerous aromatic (carminative) herbs have smooth muscle antispasmodic properties reducing digestive cramping. Marshmallow and licorice root coat and soothe the digestive tract due to their demulcent properties, reducing inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the gut. 

Digestibili-tea blend aids in treating a stomachache, nausea, gas, bloating, gastrointestinal cramping, and non-ulcer dyspepsia. Consume 6-8 ounces prior too, during, or after a large meal if you are prone to gas, bloating, and indigestion. 

Ingredients: 

  • 2-4 parts marshmallow root (Althaea)
  • 1 part anise seed (Pimpinella)
  • 1 part cardamom seed (Elettaria)
  • 1 part coriander seed (Coriandrum)
  • 1 part fennel seed (Foeniculum)
  • ½ part orange peel (Citrus x sinensis)
  • ½ part allspice fruit (Pimenta)
  • ½ part fresh ginger rhizome (Zingiber)
  • ¼-½ part licorice root (Glycyrrhiza) – omit in cases with high blood pressure or edema

Directions:

Prepare a decoction by placing 4-6 tablespoons of the following herbal blend in a pot with a lid with 1½ quarts of water (48 ounces). Bring the water and herbs to a boil, and turn immediately down to a low rolling simmer for 15-30 minutes. Allow the herbs to continue to steep; strain and serve plain, or with honey and a dairy or non-dairy creamer. Consume 8-10 ounces, up to three times daily.

Preparing a Larger Batch

To prepare a larger batch of Digestibili-tea, convert the proportions of 1 part to 1 ounce by weight. For example, add 2-4 ounces of dry marshmallow root, 1 ounce of anise seed, and so forth in a large bowl, mix, and then store in a container with ingredients and the date included on a label. 

Note 1:

All of the dried herbs will be included in the blend, except for fresh ginger; as that has to be added grated and added to each batch. Make a note on your label to include it. Or if you prefer to use dry ginger instead of fresh, you may want to decrease the portion to ¼ part due to the increased pungency of dried ginger. 

Note 2:

You can also choose another unit of measurement, but be sure to keep the measurement of the part consistent throughout blending the batch of tea. When I blend teas for the first time, I usually preparing them using measuring spoons. 

Modification:

If you prefer a creamier tea consistency, use four parts of marshmallow root; if not, use two or three tablespoons. You can also substitute slippery elm bark for marshmallow root if you have a sustainable source for it. 

Experiment with the proportions until you find a blend that you most enjoy. Make sure to keep track of your recipe so you can duplicate it.
